NEWS: Gaze backs Snakes | Other News and Info... | ||
May 2nd, 2009: TCP By: James Silver
Basketball great Andrew Gaze has backed the Cairns Taipans' community ownership scheme, saying it could act as a model for other sporting clubs to follow.
The Taipans have more than $500,000 in pledges from foundation members converted to cash and sitting in a legal firm's trust account. Gaze said the Taipans should "definitely" be a part of the league next season. "I think the Cairns Taipans went through some difficult times but they've changed their structure, they've got a new model," Gaze said. "I think it's an exciting model where it's community based and really generating the support from the locals. "I'm encouraged by it and hopefully it is one that would provide a good example for others and other communities to understand how you can get it done and be able to compete at the highest level." Gaze said was confident about the game's future in Australia. "When you look at the grassroots and the participation base, it's phenomenal, it's the envy of most other sports," he said. "In that sense it's continued to go from strength to strength. I think our elite competition, both the WNBL, the NBL and even underneath that, the ABA have gone through some difficult times. "There's a perception with basketball that it is going through some tough times and I think the perception is a little harsher than the reality." |
