NEWS: The Skytrans Cairns Taipans announce new coach | Other News and Info... | ||
March 25th, 2009: Fearne, currently the personal coach and mentor to former Taipan Nathan Jawai in his debut season with the Toronto Raptors in the NBA, is keen to return to the Far North with the Taipans. The 34-year-old has a long history with basketball in Cairns. After arriving in 1998, he was part of the Marlins national championship-winning sides of 1998 and 2004 as a player before being an inaugural member of the Taipans team in 1999-00, playing two seasons in the NBL. After a successful stint coaching Cairns under-18 and 23 representative teams between 2000-05, he took the reins of the Marlins in 2006 coaching them to the ’07 national championship glory while also being named the 2006 and ’07 QABL coach of the year. During that time, Fearne was an assistant coach to both Guy Molloy and Alan Black at the Taipans between 2001 and ’08. Aaron also created and administrated the running of the Taipans Academy from 2001-08, of which players like Jawai, Washington State University standout Aron Baynes and current Taipans Kerry Williams, Scott Cook, Dean Brebner and Dwayne Vale came through. One of Fearne’s greatest strengths is in his ability to develop young talent, something he is keen to continue with the Taipans. “I have a proven track record of developing athletes and preparing them physically and mentally to play college and professional basketball,” he said. “I’ve always been a coach that demands discipline and execution but have always felt I am fair and consistent which is what I will continue doing with the Cairns Taipans.” |
